Assignment #3- Final Project- Overview
Background:
For the final project I decided to help my sister and
brother in- law who are both Rochester Police Officers. They teach different
courses to other police officers and the information is important for them to
be able to learn and act correctly in the field. Many of the courses have just
been lectures with no other activities and now that they are teaching they want
to make it more interactive. Many of the students seem disengaged and they want
a higher success rate.
Audience:
Police Officers
Goal of the Instruction:
Have the police officers able to identify and act correctly
when dealing with Emotionally Disturbed Persons. (EDP’s).
Specific Learning Objectives:
1.)First responding police officer will know how to identify
a EDP
2.) First responding police officer will know how manage EDP
Issues to be addressed:
-People found it boring; hard to stay focused
- People were not remembering as much because they were just
being talked at
- Wanted to be more involved
We worked on creating a power point from all of the content
that needed to be addressed in the lecture. We added some videos to change the
way content was being addressed and we also made some supplemental forms and
papers for exercise. We based the flow
of our instruction of the Keller ARCS Model.
Attention:
One way to gain their attention and to get them focused on
the topic was pre lecture discussion.
Another pre lecture activity was a quiz on what motivates
you to learn. I created a quiz that asked different questions that would help
you to actually sit and think for a minute how you like to learn, what
motivates you to put effort in, etc. ( appendix A) Having them do their own
little self concept or assessment can help them decide which way is best for
them but also allows the teacher a better understanding of each individual.
Relevance: Making
it important to them through experiences, creating worth, future usefulness.
The added videos were not only to gain their attention but
showed both correctly executed and incorrectly executed scenarios that they
could be faced with. This helps to create a connection between the worth of
what they are trying to learn.
I created a scenario section where they got into groups and
played out scenarios- this allowed them to work with others which is relevant
for their job and also helped them if they were stuck to ask their peers.
Confidence: Have
objectives, feedback
In this section we wanted to add something that they could
quiz themselves on and get feedback. I created them an objectives quiz that
asked the main points in which they needed to learn. Instead of handing them
in, there would be a time limit and then they would be self -graded. This way
they could still get feedback of they did not understand something or got it
wrong. Designed as an open discussion so they could ask questions or
clarifications.
Satisfaction:
Creating reinforcement that will sustain desired behavior.
At the end there is a oral quiz in which they need to answer
questions that the teacher decides to ask. Anything can be asked based on the
content that was learned. If the teacher thinks it was satisfactory then they
would receive stars based on what level of understanding or excellence. There
are many different lectures and if they follow the star code, once an officer
got a certain level they would get a gift card. A small monetary reward for not
only completing them, but the better you perform the quicker you would reach
it.

Group Scenario Role
Play Activity
Get in groups of no
more then 4 and go over the scenario. First talk about the main points with the
breakdown of the situation and then play it out. Take turns each being the
first responding officer at the scene. Critique each time you go through
pointing out any thing wrong or something someone had missed.
Scenario 1
You are dispatched to 123 Glide St. for the 1078 call. The
job card states: The callers 18 year old son has a history of depression and
past suicide attempts. The caller also states she doesn’t believe her son has
any weapons at this time.
Upon arrival you speak with the caller, “Jan” who states she
has noticed her son “Brad” becoming increasingly depressed and feels its time
something is done about it. “Jan” states
last time the police took him to the hospital.
You speak to “Brad” who appears to be well kept, under
control and speaks to you freely about his illness. “Brad” states he does take
medication to control his depression, but stopped taking the pills a few weeks ago because he was
feeling well. When asked if he wanted to hurt or kill himself “Brad” said no.
“Brad” also states he doesn’t want to go to the hospital, it always takes too
long and he has class in the morning.
